Wessex Handwound Watches

The handmade engraved silver dial of a Wessex timepiece is obviously the component that sets us apart from other watch brands, but a high-quality watch demands a high-quality movement.

To do justice to the time and effort that we put into producing our transcendent and peerless dials, every single one of our watches has a top-quality Swiss movement to drive it.

In the case of our hand wound collection, the movement will be one of the following calibres:

  • ETA (Unitas) 6497-1 Élaboré (sub-dial at 9 o'clock)

  • ETA (Unitas) 6498-1 Élaboré (sub-dial at 6 o'clock)

These two movements which have been in constant production since 1950, were originally used in pocket watches as they are a relatively large, yet slim movement. Nigh on seventy years in constant production pays testament to the undoubted quality and durability of the marque.

More testament to the character and virtue of these calibres can be garnered from the world-class watch companies that have or still use one or both of them today; the likes of Omega, Panerai, Longine, Tissot, Alpina, Maurice Lacroix, Rado, Chronoswiss and TAG Heuer, to name but a few, are among the illustrious list of watchmakers that have had one or both of these calibres adorn their timepieces.

Basically identical in terms of components and performance the only difference between them is the position of the second hand; the 6497 is a Lepiné calibre and thus has the second hand in line with the winding stem, the 6498 is a Hunter or Savonette calibre and has the second hand at 90º to the winding stem. So with the crown at the 3 o'clock position on the case the seconds sub-dial on the 6497 will appear at the 9 o'clock position whilst with the 6498 it will be at the 6 o'clock position.
