Caelo (pronounced Kay-L-O) is the Latin word meaning 'heaven' and is also used to describe something sculpted or engraved; we thought it a perfect name for our first premium automatic, 'premium' denoting that the watch contains a Swiss movement.
Whilst designing the Caelo I had two main criteria; first, it had to be markedly different to the Ælfræd, and second, it had to be fresh and striking. I think I have ticked both boxes.
The Caelo is fitted with the Sellita SW200-1 caliber, a Swiss made movement of the highest repute. Used by many mid to high end independent watchmakers the world over because of its high quality, reliability and durability.
The SW200-1 features 26 jewels, a beat frequency of 28,800 bph, a power reserve of around 38 hours from a full wind and impressive accuracy of -12/+12 seconds per day, although we regulate the movement for even greater accuracy.
Sellita, the company, have been around since 1950; until 2003 they assembled mechanical movements provided primarily by ETA, for whom they assembled the 2824. After ETA were acquired by the Swatch group and supply of ébauches to third parties was stopped, Sellita developed their own range of movements that are nearly identical to the ETA movements they previously assembled. No IP issues arose because the ETA movements were no longer covered by patent protection.
The SW200-1 is virtually identical to the ETA 2824-2, but has one extra jewel, located under the ratchet wheel, for reduction of friction from automatic winding.
CASE & CROWN
The case for the Caelo is a real favourite of mine, the version we used for the prototype is brushed but we can also provide the watch in a beautiful mirror polished version.
It is a case manufactured in Germany, and as you would expect from German engineering, it is built to extremely high standards. Precision CNC milled from solid block 316L stainless steel and meticulously finished, this case even incorporates twin O ring gaskets!
It measures in at 42mm in diameter with a nice slim profile at a whisker over 11mm. It has beautifully contoured crown guards and the lug angle means it fits snugly and comfortably on the wrist.
The push in crown is another traditional grooved, round style, with a large flat top, ideal for engraving the Wessex Watches Cross Flory. The engraving can be done in many styles, pictured is a frosted or white engraving over a heat annealed background. It features double O ring gaskets to ensure water resistance.
DIAL & HANDS
The dial for the Caelo evolved from the design I did for the casing of another product entirely! Everyone who saw the design made favourable comments and someone said "I reckon that'd look good on one of your watches!". Since the design of the Caelo was coming up, I thought I'd give it a go!
The design centres around an abstract collage of blooming flowers and buds, relief engraved just about as deep as we could go on a watch dial without going through.
The collage is surrounded by a circular frame with the branding plates as an extension at top and bottom, I think this is far better than right across the design.
So as not to clutter the index area, Roman numerals are in place only for the quarter hours with extended and shaped index bars for the remaining 5 minute markers, all relief engraved.
The dial is finished by patinating the engraved areas followed by polishing out to achieve an aged look.
We again chose blued steel hands but this time in the classic 'eccentric moon' style popularised by a certain Monsieur Breguet!
STRAP & FASTENING
The prototype Caelo we equipped with a premium calf leather, buffalo grain strap in brown with contrasting white stitching, coupled with a brushed fishtail (or Pre-V) buckle, engraved with our cross flory. As with all our watches, you can choose whichever of our straps you like (as long as it's available in 20mm fitting). All of our straps are in premium calf leather and are available with the fastening of your choice.
