No snakes were harmed in the making of this dial!
This is another example of Wessex taking an Op Art (optical illusion art) pattern and engraving it on the watch dial to produce a stunning guilloché.
The pattern is produced in much the same way as most guilloché, by taking a base shape, in this case a checker board, repeating it in linear or descending (or ascending) sizes and applying an equal amount of (for want of a better word) distortion. With this one it's linear and the beguiling pattern, reminiscent (to us anyway!) of snakeskin, is achieved by progressively distorting checks between standard 8x8 check boards.
The main pattern is separated from the relief engraved 'diamond' index by a solid chapter ring with line engraved Roman numerals, which in turn is surrounded by solid rings with very finely engraved diamond shapes. The chapter ring is finished with small crosses between the numerals, each cross being made of 4 diamond shapes.
Guilloché (a finely engraved, repeating pattern) is traditionally produced by engraving the pattern on the dial with a hand turned Rose Engine lathe, also known as a guilloché lathe; or if budget is not a constraint, hand-engraved. Both arts are time consuming and are only found on watches costing many thousands of pounds.
Many reasonably priced watches feature patterns the makers refer to as guilloché, but the dials are mass produced with the patterns machine stamped before the pad printing stage.
We at Wessex have developed our own methods of micro-engraving dials allowing us to produce not only traditional guilloché patterns, but countless different patterns also, taking the art to a completely new level. Each one of our dials is handmade to order so the possibilities for customisation are endless!
In common with all Wessex timepieces the watches features:
- Hand-crafted relief engraved 925 silver dial
- High quality Swiss mechanical movement
- Precision CNC milled 316L stainless steel case
- Hand-crafted premium leather strap
Each of our watches is assembled, regulated and tested by us at Wessex.
